How to price an image-generation app

Separate flat per-image charges from token billing, references, and additional operations.

Two image models can use entirely different billing units. One may publish a charge for each generated image; another may bill text inputs, image inputs, and image output tokens. Comparing them using one assumed price per image can create a misleading estimate.

Identify the operation

Generation, editing, upscaling, reference processing, and partial outputs are not interchangeable. Build a separate component for each charged operation your product uses. Specify the billing platform as well as the model name: a price on a provider’s enterprise platform is not automatically its developer-API price.

Use measured tokens when possible

For token-priced images, use billing usage from representative requests. Quality settings, reference images, and output size can change those counts. Do not copy a token table from an older model into a newer model merely because both produce the same dimensions. See the OpenAI image guide and the catalog’s billing notes.

If you only have an estimate, keep it labeled as estimated and compare low and high usage scenarios. Include a separate wrapper-model component if the request also uses a billed text model.

Account for candidates and regenerations

Suppose your entered price is $0.02 per generated image and a user receives four candidates per action. The action costs $0.08, even if only one candidate is saved. At forty actions monthly, that is $3.20 per normal customer. Five times that activity costs $16.

With 10% heavy users, expected cost is $4.48 per paying customer before free usage. If you charge $9 per month, $4.52 remains before processor fees and every other cost. That is why counting saved images alone understates expenditure. The rate here is an illustrative input; verify your actual service’s billing.

Pick a sustainable unit of usage

A product can present “images” to customers while internally tracking billed candidates, sizes, operations, and regeneration behavior. Your financial model should follow the billed unit. Run the normal case and a high-regeneration case before deciding on included usage.
